3 Things You Absolutely Need to Play The Piano Well

The piano is perhaps one of the most popular musical instruments in the world. It's used in virtually every kind of music imaginable - including but not limited to pop, classical, rock, jazz, country, dance, electronic and more.

There's a good reason for this... it's versatility as an instrument is simply amazing and it can adjust its tone and color to suit the style.

Now, because of its popularity, plenty of people want to learn how to play. And a lot of people do go on to master the instrument. But at the same time, many don't. Why?

The biggest reason is that in order to learn how to play the piano well, you need to have or develop three very important characteristics in your own personality. Here they are:

First, you need to be someone who can be disciplined with themselves. Piano requires practice. A lot of it. And it's the kind of instrument that will only give you as much as you give it. If you're not disciplined about putting in your practice time daily, the piano won't reward you with beautiful music! So you absolutely have to be disciplined about practicing the instrument. In short, this means practicing even on those days when you simply don't "feel" like it. This is what truly separates those that can play beautifully from those who can't really play but wish they could.

Second, you need to have patience. You need to be committed for the long-haul. Becoming a great musician and a great pianist takes time. It doesn't happen overnight, like so many of us wish it would. So you need the patience that will carry you through on those days when you feel frustrated that you aren't improving. And yes, there will be days like that. So you need the patience to get you through and realize that this is a marathon, not a sprint. Love the process of practicing. Detach from the urgent need to want to play like a master by next week, and instead appreciate where you are now, at your current skill level.

Lastly, you need to be able to humble your ego. Sometimes, we think we are better than we truly are. For example, maybe when you're practicing, you think you are good enough to play a certain piece at full speed. So that's how you practice it. But in reality, you aren't really gaining anything from your practice session because you're not taking the time to really play through a piece the way it should be done - slowly. Being able to play a piece slowly, despite you wanting to play it fast and feeling like you already have it, takes a certain humility. Understand and accept that you still can't play a piece as quickly as you'd like, and that's okay. Take the time to slow things down and go as slow as need be so you can play the piece through with no mistakes and as musically as your level of skill and talent will allow.

So there you have it. The three characteristics you need to succeed at playing the piano, and getting good at it as quickly as possible!
